COMMISSIONS
Commission a Portrait
With every portrait I strive to create a unique and timeless work of art and to make the process simple and enjoyable for all involved. I prefer to work from live sittings and/or my own digital photographs. However, if you want to provide a photo or if it is a post humous portrait you can submit your image for review. I assess the quality of your images and let you know if there is enough information to create a successful portrait. After our initial consultation and discussion of size and pricing we start the process.

The Commission Process
Thoughtful. Collaborative. Personal.
1. Initial Consultation
Our first conversation is an opportunity to explore your vision for the portrait—its mood, scale, setting, and composition. From this discussion, I will prepare a formal quote and commission agreement. Once the agreement is signed, we’ll schedule the initial sitting.
2. Sitting & Photography
The portrait process begins with a studio sitting and photoshoot. During this 2–3 hour session, I will sketch the subject from life and capture a range of high-quality photographic references. These images will be reviewed together to select the most resonant composition.
If the portrait will be painted from photographs, I recommend a second session to complete a small head-and-shoulders color study in oil. (This step is not necessary for charcoal drawings.) This color study may be completed during the photoshoot or scheduled separately.
3. Painting the Portrait
With reference materials in place, I begin the painting process in the studio. Depending on the complexity of the portrait, additional sittings may be scheduled to refine likeness, gesture, or mood. Throughout the process, I remain in touch with the client to ensure the work remains true to the original intent.
4. Final Review & Delivery
Once the portrait is complete, you will be invited to the studio for a final viewing or sent high-resolution images for approval. Minor refinements can be made at this stage, if needed.
Completion & Care
Charcoal drawings are finished with a professional fixative and carefully packaged for shipping.
Oil paintings will require a final varnish one year after completion, once fully cured. Clients are welcome to return the painting to the studio for complimentary varnishing.
Shipping within the U.S. is included. Local clients may pick up the work in person and view it prior to delivery.
